Taiji Meditation

Oleg Cherne's workshop recording

Taiji meditation is about reconnecting with the Unified Body. This practice becomes an important element on the path of development of mind, energy, and body and is essential for movement techniques. Taiji meditation is also known as the Supreme Ultimate Meditation or Zhan Zhuang (Zhan – stand, Zhuang – tree trunk, Chinese).

In this practice, the “Tree” posture is an essential position in preparing the body, mind, and spirit in all internal systems. It helps to achieve a state of openness and closedness at the same time.

Taiji meditation performs multiple tasks related to restoring the body and aims to build body geometry and regulate energy. This practice has an applied aspect related to alchemical work, “rooting, and hanging”.

Practicing the “Tree” posture plays an important role in strengthening the power of mind and concentration. The functions of consciousness are particularly important for understanding one’s own body, the peculiarities of energy work, and the immediate understanding of the consciousness of self.

If we give importance only to the outer form, then the inner alchemical work becomes a purely formal exercise. Unless the body is built up mentally, energetically, and physically, we cannot expect results from form. At best, it will accomplish secondary tasks, and at worst, it will lead the practitioner to a false building and feeling.

To achieve success in Taiji meditation, we need to know exactly what we are working on. Depending on the structural features of the body and the preparation, different principles of work should be emphasized.

Main Principles of Taiji Meditation Practice

  • Understanding the principles of body construction
  • Working on the three components
  • Working on the external connections
  • Working on the internal connections
  • Working on inner nourishment
  • Mastering internal breathing
  • Preparation of the Cinnabar Fields
  • Working on energy circulation
  • Developing the center
  • Generation of Emptiness
  • Generation of Fullness
  • Working on building the body using the five efforts
  • Working on rooting
  • Working on “hanging”

Note that these different directions must be gone through in a particular order (as each condition triggers the next) so that the relaxed abdomen does not block the breath and the inner concentration nourishes the vitality.

The openness of the body prevents the mind from wandering so that the internal and external connections are not blocked, and the energy is evenly distributed in such a way that the full is reduced and the empty is filled.
